Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public.

Public Collectors organizes exhibitions and events, participates in exhibitions organized by others, creates exhibition opportunities for collectors, teaches, lectures, responds to research inquiries, and makes its own publications.

This blog is intended as a more personal extension of the main website and is used primarily for materials from my own collection, or photos I've taken myself.

The administrator of Public Collectors is Marc Fischer.

Congratulations to Mairead Case on the successful completion of her Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency!

Mairead Case is a writer currently living in Denver, Colorado. She and I have a whole bunch of mutual admiration for one another. Known for being a brilliant editor, Mairead was one of the people I allowed to have an editorial look at my essay on Malachi Ritscher while I was working on it a few years ago. Despite the fact that she lived in Chicago for a long time (before moving to Denver to pursue a creative writing PhD), Mairead and I haven’t seen each other in about eight years, so I was extremely happy for her application. I think this also may have been the longest conversation we’ve ever had.

While Mairead had been to Joong Boo Market before, she had never dined at the Snack Counter. It was pretty chill today; we found a table easily and didn’t have to rush. We both ordered the Sashimi Salad, which was super delicious. Every speck of chili-paste covered fish, rice and salad greens was consumed.
Mairead currently teaches at University of Denver in the English Department. Every Friday she leads a poetry workshop at the Denver women’s jail. We talked quite a bit about our individual and shared teaching experiences with incarcerated people (I was a visiting artist in a maximum security prison a long time ago), as well as in a university and high school. Teaching in a jail naturally poses all sorts of special challenges, but uh… teaching anywhere in this social, political, and economic climate also poses all sorts of special challenges! I learned about the range of approaches to writing and creativity that she encounters at the jail, including a sexagenarian inmate who told Mairead straight from the get-go that all she writes is porn. We shared feelings about urging college students to delve into library collections and archives. Mairead also informed me about the pr evalence of white students with dreadlocks in Denver (including secret dreadlocks that reveal themselves unexpectedly).

Finally, Mairead came to me with a specific research question for a novel—with a contemporary setting—that she is working on: What kind of metal would a bummed out sixteen year old girl be listening to? This opened up a complicated and interesting discussion. I’m about thirteen years older than Mairead and for me, when I was a teenager in the 1980s, it felt like everything crazy in music that I loved was happening for the first time. So many bands were just getting started or hitting their early peaks. Think of Slayer in 1986, for example. Thirty years later, many kids still listen to exactly the same bands because so many of them either never broke up, or are constantly reforming for big music festivals. Even scarier, the parents of a sixteen year old might listen to the same music and might want to take their kids to see an extreme meta l or punk band in concert. We talked about music festivals and how they seem to cater to a particular demographic, even if the kinds of bands are not exactly the same genre—how there is something unified about the bands that play the Gathering of the Juggalos, just as there’s a rough coherence in the band selection of the Warped Tour or Riot Fest. Young people today seem to be a lot more accepting of wild stylistic dissonance in their music; the hairsplitting differences that could isolate one genre’s fans from another in the 1980s, don’t seem to be the same kind of hangup for kids today.

This could have easily been a five hour discussion if either of us had that kind of time today. Alas, Mairead is in town to see Diamanda Galás perform tonight with a mutual friend of ours (great idea!), and I had to run off and teach this afternoon. Before parting, we exchanged publications. I gave Mairead a set of the Public Collectors Library Excavations booklets and she gave me a copy of her 2015 novel See You in the Morning. I’m excited to dig in. You can learn more about Mairead’s work .

This was the second and last residency for April. There’s still an opening in May. Apply, or recommend a friend after reviewing this link.

Congratulations to Peter Redgrave on the successful completion of his Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency!

Peter is visiting Chicago from Baltimore as part of a performance tour he is undertaking with his collaborator Khristian Weeks. Peter and I have known each other for some time, but I have not seen him in at least nine years so it was great to catch up and hear what’s new with his creative practice.

We opted for an 11:30 lunch which worked out well; we grabbed seating at the Joong Boo Snack Counter without having to muscle in on anyone’s space. Peter had the Vegetable Bi Bim Bap and I went for the Spicy Squid. I just love that squid and Peter finished every last bite of his meal.

Peter works primarily in music and performance and his current work is a kind of vaudeville that is highly physical and draws on his training in Butoh dance. We talked about his approach to performing and the urgency he has been feeling to go on tour while he’s still young enough to still do this bodily demanding work. Peter has primarily been performing in DIY spaces, and he and Khristian are often mixed together on bills with bands. While audiences in some cities and venues have been highly receptive to this movement-based work, in one case, a bar owner in Cincinnati actually disrupted and ended the performance, feeling that their use of the space violated some kind of on-stage/off-stage separation sanctity. Sad!

We talked about taking our work on the road—something I increasingly do with publishing fairs rather than performance, and I shared some of my experiences with the dispersed community of artist publishers, which perhaps mirrors the DIY music and performance scene in terms of mutual support, the perils and pleasures of travel, and similarly precarious economics.

If you’d like to see Peter and Kristian perform in Chicago, you’ll have a couple opportunities. On April 15th they’ll be at the Spawned Seeds 3 Post-butoh Festival at the Learning Machine (tickets). and on April 16th they’ll perform at Links Hall at 7:30 PM (tickets).

To learn more about the Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency, follow this link. There is one opening in May, and another available in June. April is currently filled.

I intend to listen to the Budgie cover on Garage Days about five times in a row. If all Metallica did was cover Budgie, it would have been enough. Also, I must say, my 30 year old records sound fantastic. Somehow I really took great care of this stuff.

This door has had a grip on my eyes and brain for a couple of years. Even from a distance it’s possible to see that it’s not like other doors. It is extraordinarily encrusted with paint. The key hole is filled with paint. The edges around the door are so thickly covered that it seems unlikely it could be opened from the inside, even with a swift kick or a shoulder. Sometime about a year ago the reason for the paint was revealed. It was tagged with a gang sign. It has apparently been tagged by a gang or gangs so many times that the door has developed a thick skin of paint armor. This door is on a multi-unit house directly across the street from the parking lot of the high school in Hermosa where I work. I’ve come to regard it as a kind of meditative site for thinking about the complex situation we have in Chicago, where the damn police occupy our public high schools, inside and out, every day, and the gangs commandeer homes a s recruitment aids. This cycle has to be broken, but our current Mayor and Governor certainly aren’t going to be the ones to do it.

Congratulations to Molly Davy on the successful completion of her Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency! All of my photos are somewhat out of focus, so I picked the one (with chopsticks in motion) that looks the most celebratory.

I first met Molly about four years ago at Chicago ‘Zine Fest. She is a longtime supporter of Public Collectors and I’ve been following her blog () for years. Molly started posting in 2009 so there are thousands of things to look at, including a wealth of feminist art history, and bits of poetry and film, mixed with other interesting odds and ends and moments from her personal journey. The breadth of Molly’s interest in art history is what sets Womanhouse apart from so many other blogs on Tumblr. Her enthusiastic curiosity is always evident, and the way she shares her interests and discoveries reminds me of the best moments in college when friends would hip each other to the newest cool thing they learned about in an old book or periodical from the library.

Molly Davy lives in New York but is originally from Minnesota. She flew to Chicago and spent the day here before traveling on to Minneapolis to visit family. This morning Molly came directly from the airport to my house, which gave us some time to talk before lunch. She has been acquiring publications I’ve made for some time, but a home/studio visit was a good opportunity to give her some new things that she didn’t have yet. Most residents usually wind up taking home some complimentary publications. After checking out some of my artist ephemera archives and printed collections, we headed over to Joong Boo.

We arrived at Joong Boo and found a classic Joong Boo situation: a chaotic parking lot with multiple people attempting to get in, pull out, jam their car into a place it probably should not go, and drivers exhibiting widely var ying levels of patience. Ultimately a Joong Boo parking lot attendant guided us to safety and we parked way in the back.

Inside, things were about the same at the snack stand. Every table was filled with people eating or waiting for their food. There is a special kind of snack stand rhythm, however, and I have found that no matter how dire things appear, a place to sit will eventually open up by the time your food is finished, so long as you are alone or a party of two. Today was a perfect example of why Joong Boo Residencies are for one resident at a time.

As expected, we did eventually get a table and after a longer than usual wait, our food arrived. Molly had the Tofu soup. I had the Seafood Noodle soup. There are some things at Joong Boo that are more inspired than others and unfortunately my dish was not particularly special. The broth was great and the noodles were fine, but I’m pretty sure they just dumped some frozen mixed seafood into the broth, boiled it, a nd called it a meal. Not terrible, but not something I’d order again. This is what happens when you try to take a break from dishes with a red chili paste base.

Our conversation was largely about things we each are working on now, and what’s coming up next. Molly is wrapping up her Masters degree at NYU where she’s been developing strategies for writing about climate change and the Anthropocene in their Media, Culture, and Communication program. Her undergraduate work was in Art History, and she’s been working on and off as an archivist in a number of situations—in particular with individual artists like Glenn Ligon and Annie Shaver-Crandell. We also shared our mutual fondness for fellow friend, Minneapolis resident, and a Joong Boo Residency alumnus: Andy Sturdevant.

After a leisurely lunch (those huge bowls of soup take forever to eat), we walked around the rest of the market a bit and Molly grabbed some sweet snacks for later. I also pointe d out one of my favorite things: a package of assorted candied nuts and dried beans that that claims, “Each piece of workmanship of experts is ready to put sincerity.” Molly told me that this should be the residency motto, and I think she’s right. If you aren’t ready to put sincerity, this residency isn’t for you.

This wraps up Public Collectors Joong Boo Residencies for March. The next residency opening is in May and you can either eat at Joong Boo or Staropolska (if you prefer Polish food). No Chicago Residents, unless you’re willing to play dirty and offer me a bribe. Application details h ere.

Congratulations to Hazel Meyer on the successful completion of her Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency!

Hazel is a visual artist visiting from Toronto. In her recent work, she is “interested in muscles, sweat, handmade tools, equipment, and how sports can provide space for moments of radical tenderness and desire.” She came to Chicago to do research at the Leather Archives and I was glad that we could meet up on her last day in the city before returning home.

Hazel opted for an early lunch which was perfect because for over an hour, we had an entire table to ourselves. A little privacy is really great when the conversation is centered on things like fetish culture, death, incarceration, women’s bodybuilding, LGBTQ archives, lesbian porn, and the work of the late artist Bob Flanagan.

For food, I had the Spicy Cod Soup—a challenging dish to eat when you don’t want to swallow lots of little bones , and Hazel had the Sashimi Salad. The Joong Boo kitchen was extra efficient and in only about 5 minutes we were eating lunch.

In addition to knowing about my work in Public Collectors, Hazel also was quite familiar with my work in the group Temporary Services so she had some questions about my practice and several projects and publications. We also talked about our teaching practices, publishing, and why I feel that Hazel really needs to stop putting off viewing the documentary “Pumping Iron II: The Women” and should just finally see it already. You should see it too if you haven’t. It’s a fascinating exploration of femininity, physiognomy, gender, and the debate over male hetero aesthetic biases versus the ultimate possibilities for total female muscle development.

By around the hour and fifteen minute mark, the line of people waiting to order was getting pretty long and I felt like we should surrender our space to others that would soon be dining . We exchanged publications and hugs and Hazel headed back to the train, and ultimately one last visit to the Leather Archives. This was a particularly enjoyable residency. You can check out more of Hazel’s work on her website.

Public Collectors Joong Boo Residencies are full for the rest of the month and for April, but May residencies are available. More details and info on past residencies here:

Congratulations to John Davis on the successful completion of his Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency at Staropolska!

The Joong Boo Residency at Staropolska is a new variant on the popular and delicious Joong Boo Residency, whereby residents may now opt for a meal at Staropolska - a Polish restaurant on 3030 N Milwaukee Ave, not far from Joong Boo. Staropolska is a good choice for people who do not like Korean Food, or for myself when I manage to approve four residencies in the same month and don’t want to die from eating too much salt and red chili paste. Staropolska is quiet, delicious, and a place where it’s usually possible to talk for a couple hours with minimal disruption. Unlike Joong Boo, I’ve never had to jockey for a table at Staropolska. They seat you, you settle in, and you eat a LOT of Polish food. The workers are lovely.

John Davis is the Performing Arts Metadata Archivist at the University o f Maryland. He is also a musician whose bands have included Q And Not U, Georgie James, Paint Branch and Title Tracks. He also recently produced two issues of a ‘zine called Confab, where he and two friends present an interview with a different D.C. band in each edition. John was  visiting Chicago from Maryland and I was excited to learn more about his work.

In his job at University of Maryland, John has been archiving and curating the D.C. Punk and Indie Fanzine Collection, the Sharon Cheslow Punk Flyers Collection, 1979-1991, and the Jason Farrell Flyers & Posters Collection, 1987-2012. For the past two years he has also been working to archive and digitize Ian MacKaye’s collection of around 1,700 fanzines.

John wanted to discuss strategies for making publications about these collections and how to activate this work through exhibits and events. We talked a lot about the efforts others have made to deal with historical fanzines in various books, and where these publications sometimes fall short or don’t feel entirely satisfying. And we chatted a bit about various intersections of punk rock and library work, as more than a few music luminaries are now employed in archivist roles.

Oh, and as for the food, John had the Pork Cutlet with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. I had the Zucchini Pancakes stuffed with chicken, peppers, herbs, and goat cheese, along with a side of beet salad. It was, as usual, a ton  of food.

Residencies are closed for the rest of March and April but I’m taking applications for May and beyond. Future residents are invited to apply for either a Joong Boo Residency, or a Joong Boo Residency at Staropolska. As always, lunch is on me. More details and history here.

Congratulations to Christopher Schreck on the successful completion of his Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency! [Christopher preferred not to have a portrait photo with this post.]

Christopher is from Chicago but moved to New York about six years ago. He describes himself as a writer, editor, and publisher who has also done work in music and photography. Though we have never met in person before, it turns out that I did see Christopher play about ten years ago when he was a member of the band Icy Demons and that group opened for The Ex at the Logan Square Auditorium.

Usually I buy lunch for residents but today we decided to have dinner, which is also a perfectly valid option. We arrived at a busy Joong Boo Snack Corner that gradually opened up a bit so that Christopher could enjoy the U-Dong, and I could eat the Spicy Squid without having to squeeze my arms in tight, possibly elbowing the woman next to me who also ordered th e Spicy Squid. Christopher had a lot of questions for me about my practice, its history, and how I perceive the mix of things I do. Though he has been writing for more art-focused publications, as well as crafting press releases for galleries, Christopher’s approach has a definite flexibility and he seems similarly unworried about the range of things he does.

In addition to reflecting on and asking about each others’ various ways of working, we realized that we have many friends in common including a couple of the upcoming Joong Boo Residents (who will not be announced until they complete their residencies!). Christopher was kind enough to bring me one his publications and we made a booklet exchange. He gave me “Press Release Poems”. It is a chapbook published last year that reconfigures fragments from art exhibition press releases to create thoughtfully structured works that I’m enjoying, I suspect, a lot more than I’d probably like the sourc e material they derive from.

After eating in the Snack Corner, we stopped at the dumpling stand in the parking lot and I sprang for a Kimchi dumpling for Christopher to take for later. He also wisely grabbed one of the pork dumplings. Two of those dumplings is basically a second dinner, so hopefully he will pace himself.

You can see more of Christopher’s work on his website. The next openings for Joong Boo Residencies are not until May, and because I’m a pushover and love all of the applicants, there are actually three more residencies scheduled for March. One of them, however, might be a trial for a residency at a different locat ion. Could it be that the Joong Boo Residency Program might shift to a new spot and become the ‘Something Else’ Residency Program? Stay tuned.

The best thing I saw at Swap-O-Rama in Chicago this morning: a leafblower for sale that was modified to be more functional with help from a downspout and some duct tape.
